Umpires

Interested in Becoming an Umpire?

Umpiring is a great way to build confidence, strengthen your understanding of netball and contribute to the game. Whether you are getting started or developing your skills, your club can help you take the next step.

Rules and Learning Resources

Download the free Rules of Netball book from World Netball. The rules are useful for players, coaches and umpires.

Keep the rules handy with the free Rules of Netball app: Apple App Store or Google Play.

Watch the rules explainer videos for help understanding how the rules apply on court.

How to Get Started

  1. Contact your club’s umpire coordinator to let them know you are interested and ask about local training and support.
  2. Visit Netball Learning, sign in or create an account, and search for the Rules of Netball Theory Exam. Check the current fee and enrolment instructions before purchasing.
  3. Read the rules before starting. The standard exam has a two-hour time limit, and a score of 70% or higher earns a pass certificate. Follow the exam instructions about reference materials. If you need an adjustment to the time limit, contact Netball NSW before starting.
  4. Once you pass, download your certificate and provide it to your club’s umpire coordinator. Ask about practical umpiring opportunities, mentoring and your next development steps.

Passing the exam is one step in the umpire development pathway. It does not award an umpire badge on its own. Visit Netball Australia’s umpiring accreditation page for course and assessment requirements.
